Why Is CO2 Laser Marking Machine Not Suitable For Engraving Metal?

Mar 16, 2022

CO2 laser marking machine is a common type of laser inkjet printer on the market, and it is used in a wide range of fields, but it is not suitable for every material. Just like metal products, it is not suitable for carbon dioxide laser marking machine to operate. The reason is that the infrared band used by the carbon dioxide laser marking machine has a wavelength of 10.6nm, which is limited to processing soft products and cannot be used for metal products at all. Different wavelengths can mark different materials. Therefore, CO2 laser marking machine is mainly used for non-metallic product marking machine. The detailed reasons are as follows:

1. Dot matrix engraving Dot matrix engraving is similar to high-definition dot matrix printing. The laser head swings left and right, engraving a line consisting of a series of points each time, and then the laser head moves up and down at the same time to engrave multiple lines, and then forms a complete image or text. Bitmap engraving can be used for scanned graphics, text and vectorized graphics.

2. Vector cutting is different from lattice engraving. Vector cuts are made on the outer contours of graphics and text. We usually use this mode to penetrate and cut wood, acrylic particles, paper and other materials, or to make marks on various material surfaces.

3. Engraving speed: Engraving speed refers to the moving speed of the laser head, usually expressed in IPS (inches per second). High speed brings high production efficiency. Speed is also used to control the depth of cut. For a given laser intensity, the slower the speed, the greater the depth of cutting or engraving. You can use the engraving machine panel to adjust the speed, or you can use the computer's print driver to adjust the speed. In the range of 1% to 100%, the adjustment is 1%.

4. Engraving strength: Engraving strength refers to the strength of the laser on the surface of the material. For a particular engraving speed, the greater the intensity, the greater the depth of cut or engraving. You can adjust the intensity with the engraving machine panel or with the computer's print driver. In the range of 1% to 100%, the adjustment is 1%. The greater the intensity, the faster the speed. The deeper the cutting depth.

5. Spot size: The spot size of the laser beam can be adjusted by lenses with different focal lengths. High-resolution engraving uses a small spot lens. A large spot lens is used for low resolution engraving, but it is a better choice for vector cutting. The new device comes standard with a 2.0-inch lens. The spot size is in the middle, which is suitable for various occasions.

CO2 laser marking machines generally use CO2 lasers, and the power of the laser tubes currently used belongs to the range of medium and small power. The largest is 300W. Initially, metals absorb less wavelength laser light. Therefore, CO2 laser marking machines are generally not used to engrave metal.
